The NES system from Nintendo was the highlight of my gaming career as a kid. I looked forward to the weekend when I dad would take me to the local move rental store to rent the next hot game I had been lusting after. I remember the huge cartridges that you couldn't even think about stuffing in your back pocket to sneek to school and how after months of dedicated play your best friends became q-tips and alcohol. Many games were revived for a few more hours of play with these handy tools.
By far, I was facinated most with Super Mario Brothers. When I owned an ATARI, my favorite thing to do was go to my friend's house next door and play this addictive game. This was one of the most popular games ever made for the system. Every day I'd come home with another warp zone tip to help me in my princess saving endeavors. This game had my heart until Mike Tyson's Punchout was introduced to me. I loved this game so much that I would hog the controller and work Little Mac's gloves to death. my babysitter's son had an NES System, and I played it every time I got a chance. His mother made him let me play. I was so infatuated with this game, he had to play a smart trick on me. Whenever I demanded to play, He would put in the code for Mike Tyson and watch him beat me silly. My turn became very short and his gaming experience became more satisfying.
While Contra was also a great game to me, I almost scratched the hair out of my head trying to beat it without any special help. Then someone shared a cheat code with me that took my Contra experience to the next level. Pressing Up up down down left right left right B A Start that the opening screen equipped me with 30 lives. This was more than enough to help me kick some alien butt. With this code, I played so wreckless that I sometimes had to use a continue because I lost all of the lives.
NES also made huge advances in sports video games. Tecmo Bowl and Double Dribble were among the best sports games I participated in. I never was a sports person so in between Temo Bowl plays, I just pick any strategy and watched to see what happened. Later I finallt figured it out and gave my friends some pretty good competition.
Today I have a 10 year old son and I see the games more and more graphically enhanced and realistic. It really is cool to see how video games have evolved. I play the PS3 and the X-Box, but there is a spot in my heart that will always belong to the 8-bit graphics and left to right scrolling games of the NES System. My laptop is equipped with and NES Emulator and any game you can think of that the creators of this system are famous for making. Long live old school gaming!
